On October 10, 2024, Chase Credit Cards can no longer be used to pay for third-party Buy Now, Pay Later payments.

You can still split your credit card payments into several installments via Chase Pay Over Time. Or you can get your Chase debit card purchase refunded, which you will then repay in four installments with Chase Pay in 4.

Why is Chase Stopping People from Using Credit Cards to Pay for BNPL?

Chase generally doesn’t allow customers to use their credit cards to pay for credit products. You could only pay your Klarna, Zip, Afterpay, and Affirm loans with your Chase credit card due to the lack of regulations affecting BNPL before May 2024.

However, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued an interpretative rule in May 2024, stating that BNPL providers are “card issuers” under Regulation Z.

Essentially, the CFPB is treating BNPL providers as credit card issuers. And you can’t pay for your credit card bill with another bank’s credit card (unless you apply for a balance transfer). So expect other financial institutions to follow suit in the near future.

It’s important to note that since traditional BNPL can’t be considered as “open-end credit” and they don’t have finance charges, they’re “subjected to some, but not all, of Regulation Z’s credit card regulations.”

💡 Note: Chase isn’t the first bank to do this, Capital One barred their users from using their credit cards to pay for BNPL in December 2020.

How Does Chase Benefit From This?

Chase’s decision to block credit card payments to Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) providers nudges customers to its own BNPL products: Chase Pay Over Time (formerly My Chase Plan) and Chase Pay in 4.

This not only allows Chase to capture all fees and interest from these transactions, but it also provides them with better control over customer data and spending behaviors. Data that is invaluable for tailoring financial products and services.
